Training Branch is responsible for all matters related to maritime education, examinations, and training. This includes the approval and monitoring of Maritime Training Institutes (MTIs), the development and implementation of training programs, and the issuance of guidelines and notices for these institutes, as well as other related matters. All activities are conducted in strict compliance with the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) and the M.S. CW (STCW) Rules, 2014.

In fulfillment of these responsibilities, the Director-General of Shipping (DGS) approves Maritime Training Institutes (MTIs) and their training programs. The DGS also issues various guidelines, training circulars, orders, and Merchant Shipping Notices periodically to monitor and regulate these institutes in accordance with the relevant legislation.
