The Engineering Wing of the Directorate General of Shipping is headed by the Chief Surveyor-cum-Additional DG (Technical) and comprises three Principal Officers (Engineering), eight Deputy Chief Surveyors, and twenty-nine Engineer and Ship Surveyors.

The Engineering Wing looks after the following core functions:
- Survey and Certification of Indian ships including passenger Ships to ensure Statutory Compliance AND implementation of International Safety Management (ISM) Code on Indian vessels and Companies.
- Port State Control and Flag State Implementation on Ships towards elimination of Substandard Shipping and MARPOL related matters towards prevention of Maritime Pollution and all Green Shipping Matters and Decarbonization Initiatives.
- Implementation of the Hong Kong Convention and all Ship Recycling Matters.
- Monitoring of Recognised Organisations, Bunker Suppliers, FFA and L/B Davits Service stations.
- Examination and Certification of Engineers as per the STCW Convention.
- Spearheading India’s position in IMO’s MEPC, TCC and III Committees and related Intersessional Working Group’s.
- Convention Responsibilities: SOLAS- Chapter II-1; II-2; III; IX; X; MARPOL Annexes I,II,III,IV,V,VI; BWM; AFS; STCW(Engg.) Conventions; FSS, HSC, IGF, ISM, RO, NOx Codes etc.
The objective of the Engineering Wing is to ensure compliant, safe, and sustainable shipping.
