• Brief History Of MMD, Jamnagar
  • Creation of Office :

    Post Independence scenario, there was a need felt to open a MMD office to discharge duties & responsibilities set out under the then M.S. Act 1923 implemented through the Merchant Shipping Laws (Extension to Acceding States and Amendment) Act 1949. Prior Independence, areas of then Saurashtra were covered by MMD, Bombay (State of Bombay) and owing to significant port in upper Gulf of Kutch, no records are available as to services rendered there, however, it is assumed that service to country craft applications in that area, were attended by MMD, Karachi.

    Additionally, with regard implementation of Inland Steam-Vessels Act 1917 wherein, Port of Bedi had one of the earliest declared I.V. limits and Inland Vessels register, under the Jurisdiction of erstwhile State of Bombay, there was a need to have local Registrar Office in the region.

    In the year of 1962, upon Work Study Unit recommendations, (whilst, the applications in this region were attended by camping surveyors from MMD, Mumbai) a separate office, at Jamnagar under the administrative control of the Principal Officer, MMD, District Mumbai was started.

    To cater for registration and rendering services to applications/needs of wooden crafts (MSVs ), Coasting vessels/I.V crafts and few large ocean going Indian steel vessels (vessels calling at Port of Okha, Bhogat, Bedi, Sikka, Salaya, Porbandar, Veraval, Bhavnagar, Alang, Muldwarka, Pipavav, Khodinar,Chhara port,Hazira, Dahej & Magdalla.

  • Office Premises :

    Initially in the year 1962-63, office was situated at a building on rental basis at Digjam circle for more than 20yrs. Due to sale of that property, the office of MMD,Jamnagar had to be shifted, during that time Department of Lighthouses & Lightships constructed their own building and offered the 3rd floor of their building to MMD,Jamnagar for rent. In the year 1984-85, the office of MMD, Jamnagar shifted to the building owned by the Department of Lighthousees & Lightships on renal basis and till date continuing at the same place for more than 40years.
