IMO Participation

India actively participates in the International Maritime Organization (IMO) as a member state, contributing to global maritime policy, safety, and environmental protection. As a key maritime nation, India is involved in the formulation and implementation of IMO conventions, such as:

  • SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea)
  • MARPOL (Marine Pollution Prevention)
  • STCW (Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping)

The country plays a vital role in discussions on maritime security, pollution control, seafarer welfare, and sustainable shipping.

India is also a member of the IMO Council, influencing decisions on regulatory frameworks and global shipping governance.

Through the Directorate General of Shipping, India ensures compliance with IMO regulations and continuously enhances its maritime infrastructure to align with international standards.
