Committee / Sub-Committee
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) operates through a structured framework comprising the Assembly, the Council, and five principal Committees. These Committees are :
- Maritime Safety Committee (MSC)
- Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC)
- Legal Committee
- Technical Cooperation Committee (TCC)
- Facilitation Committee (FAL)
Each of these bodies plays a vital role in shaping international maritime policy and regulations, focusing on areas such as safety at sea, environmental protection, legal matters, technical assistance, and the simplification of maritime procedures.
Supporting the work of these main Committees is a network of Sub-Committees, each tasked with detailed technical and regulatory discussions. These include highly specialized workstreams such as:
- NCSR (Navigation, Communications and Search and Rescue)
- CCC (Carriage of Cargoes and Containers)
- PPR (Pollution Prevention and Response)
- SDC (Ship Design and Construction)
- III (Implementation of IMO Instruments)
- HTW (Human Element, Training and Watchkeeping)
- SSE (Ship Systems and Equipment)
India actively participates across all these bodies, contributing through a diverse group of maritime experts, technical professionals, and legal advisers. Indian delegations play a crucial role in influencing global maritime norms, particularly in areas of safety regulations, environmental standards, technical cooperation, and procedural facilitation.
This section provides summary reports and meeting digests from IMO Committees and Sub-Committees, along with submitted position papers, forthcoming agenda topics, and draft deadlines relevant to India's engagement. It also features detailed profiles of India's lead delegates, including their areas of responsibility and participation in correspondence groups—collaborative working groups tasked with preparing technical documents and draft proposals.
By actively engaging with the IMO's technical and regulatory machinery, India reaffirms its commitment to shaping fair, forward-looking, and inclusive maritime governance at the global level. These ongoing efforts reflect the nation's strategic maritime priorities and its leadership in supporting safety, sustainability, and innovation in the international shipping industry.
