About Us
The Coastal Shipping Branch of the Directorate General of Shipping is responsible for coordinating regulatory, administrative, and policy matters pertaining to sailing vessels, fishing boats, and coastal trade.
Key responsibilities include:

From sailboats to cargo ships-India's coastal waters power commerce, culture, and community.
- Coordinating the repatriation of distressed sailing vessel crew and overseeing policy matters concerning Indian fishing boats.
- Liaising with the Regional Officer (Sails) in Mumbai, Jamnagar, and Tuticorin, and Port Officers of Coastal States for the issuance of Sailing Vessel Identity Cards, in accordance with the Merchant Shipping (Sailing Vessel) Rules, 1997.
- Operating a centralized system for identity card issuance as per DGS Coastal Branch Circulars No. 11 of 2020 (dated 19.03.2020) and No. 30 of 2020 (dated 05.08.2020).
- Operating a centralized system for identity card issuance as per DGS Coastal Branch Circulars No. 11 of 2020 (dated 19.03.2020) and No. 30 of 2020 (dated 05.08.2020).
- Handling regulatory issues related to the Merchant Shipping (Conditions for Carriage of Livestock) Rules, 2020, and the Rules governing Fishing Vessels.
- Processing cases involving the closure of the registry of a sailing vessel.
- Coordinating with Regional Officer(Sails), Mumbai, Jamnagar & Tuticorin and Port Officers of Maritime Coastal States in relation to issuance of Sailing Vessel Identity Cards as per the provisions of Merchant Shipping (Sailing Vessel) Rules, 1997 and centralized system of issuance of Sailing Vessel Identity Cards from the Coastal Shipping Branch in terms of DGS Coastal Branch Circulars No.11 of 2020 dated 19.03.2020 and 30 of 2020 dated 05.08.2020.
