Established as part of the network of Mercantile Marine Departments, which originated in 1929 with the division of India's coastline into districts based on major ports to regulate and support maritime operations.
Mercantile Marine Department, Mangalore headed by Surveyor Incharge is under administrative control of MMD Kochi.
Overseen by the Directorate General of Shipping, the department at Mangalore plays a vital regulatory role for the region's shipping and maritime industry.
Functions include:
- Registration and periodic survey of ships and crafts to ensure compliance with both national and international maritime safety standards.
- Inspection of vessels under port state and flag state control; issuance of seaworthiness certificates.
- Examination and approval of logistics related to dangerous cargo and approval of various maritime safety and operation plans according to International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code.
- Circulation of navigational warnings and marine safety information to shipping companies and mariners.
- Supports the legislative and operational frameworks needed to maintain Mangalore's status as a major shipping hub, serving shipping companies, port authorities, and maritime professionals in the region.
