Roles And Responsibilities

1 Officer & Registrar of Indian Ship The final decision-making authority in the MMD; ensures safe and efficient ship operations; supervises personnel; reports to DGS on key issues; covers a specific port or region.
2 Implementation of Policies Implements the policies and directives of the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS).
3 Supervision Supervises the work of surveyors and other staff under their jurisdiction.
4 Report to DGS Forwards reports to the DGS on specific issues needing attention from high-level officials.
5 Registration Responsible for the registration of sea-going vessels as per the Merchant Shipping Act, 1958.
6 Surveys and Examinations Oversees ship surveys and conducts examinations under the Act.
7 Safety Ensures ship and personnel safety and the implementation of international maritime conventions.
8 Investigations Conducts investigations into shipping casualties and reports to the DGS.
9 Deputy Chief Ship Surveyor Ensures vessel compliance with statutory, national, and international regulations; oversees surveys, inspections, certifications, ship registration, seafarer exams, and safety systems.
10 Engineer and Ship Surveyor Ensures compliance with engineering and structural ship standards; conducts surveys, approves plans, certifies tonnage, and assesses engineering seafarers.
11 Nautical Surveyor Ensures maritime operational safety; inspects ships, approves nautical plans, surveys dangerous goods, assesses training institutes and seafarers.
12 Ship Surveyor Inspects hulls, machinery, and equipment; verifies certificates; investigates accidents; prepares compliance reports.
13 Radio Inspector Inspects ship radio installations; ensures compliance with radio rules and standards; verifies equipment maintenance for 12 months.
