Sub-Ordinate Offices

Under the administrative control of the Principal Officer, MMD Chennai, there are two more Mercantile Marine Departments, Seamen’s Employment Office, Seamen’s Welfare Office and RO (Sails).

MERCANTILE MARINE DEPARTMENT, VISAKHAPATNAM
  • MMD, Visakhapatnam functions under the administrative control of the Principal Officer, MMD, Chennai for fulfilling the policy task of DGS on safety of ships and personnel onboard and other related Maritime matters.

  • This office is headed by a Surveyor-in-Charge and supported by other staff members.

MERCANTILE MARINE DEPARTMENT, TUTICORIN
  • MMD, Tuticorin functions under the administrative control of the Principal Officer, MMD, Chennai for fulfilling the policy task of DGS on safety of ships and personnel onboard and other related Maritime matters.

  • This office is headed by a Surveyor-in-Charge and supported by other staff members.

SEAMEN’S EMPLOYMENT OFFICE, CHENNAI
  • The Seamen Employment Office (SEO), Chennai is established under section 12 of M.S. Act 1958 to regulate the employment of seamen on a rotational basis.

  • Since 1992, the Retainer Scheme has replaced the Rotational Employment Scheme. This office deals with RPSL companies, sign in/off details of seafarers, and issuance of BSID cards.

  • It also handles Government Shipping Office duties, including the engagement and discharge of Officers & Crew and issuance of CDCs.

SEAMEN’S WELFARE OFFICE, CHENNAI
  • The Seamen’s Welfare Office (SWO), Chennai was established under Section 13 of the MS Act, 1958 to assist Indian seamen abroad, provide recreational facilities, and coordinate with foreign officials.

  • This office is headed by the Seamen’s Welfare Officer and assisted by support staff.

REGIONAL OFFICE (SAILS), TUTICORIN
  • The RO (Sails) Tuticorin regulates trade standardization, sailing vessel registration, identity card issuance/renewal for crew, and crew repatriation in case of casualties abroad.

  • This office is headed by the Regional Officer (Sails) and supported by staff.
